The Exemplary Psychiatrist Awards program allows NAMI members and affiliates in every state, city, and community throughout the country to honor publicly the wonderful contributions that many psychiatrists make to improve the lives of people with psychiatric disorders.

Established in 1992, the awards are given to a group of exemplary psychiatrists each year at a breakfast ceremony during the American Psychiatric Association’s annual conference. Since its inception, more than 1000 awards have been presented.

All of the nominations are submitted through a NAMI state or local affiliate office. Many psychiatrists have described this award as one of the most important honors they can receive, because it comes from the people who need their help the most – people living with mental illnesses and their family members.

The criteria for these awards recognize psychiatrists who have "gone the extra mile" with NAMI members and have made substantial contributions to local or state NAMI activities. To nominate a psychiatrist for this year’s award, please click here to download the Nomination Form and Guidelines (PDF, opens in a new window).  For more information about NAMI's Exemplary Psychiatrist Awards Program, contact Arlene Krohmal (703-600-1102 email: ArleneK@nami.org
