Family Members & Caregivers Frequently Asked Questions

My teenager is acting differently. Could it be the beginning of a mental illness?

Unfortunately, mental health issues can often begin during a person’s teen years or young adulthood. Knowing the warning signs can help you understand what’s happening and how to get help. Mental health services and supports are available and the earlier you access them the better.

NAMI Basics is a free education program that addresses these needs. This six-session course is taught by trained teachers who are also parents/caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental health conditions early in life. It provides the fundamentals of caring for yourself, your family and your child. For information about programs near you, contact your NAMI Affiliate.
