NAMI Multnomah is the Portland metro affiliate and one of 1,100 nationwide affiliates of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, which was founded in 1979.
NAMI Multnomah is a grassroots, nonprofit organization that has been active in Multnomah County, Oregon since 1983, with historical roots several years prior.
Our Mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families living with mental illness through support, education, and advocacy. NAMI Multnomah helps educate people in the Portland metro area about mental health issues. We hold regular educational events, weekly support groups, and quarterly classes to help the public better understand how to live with mental illness and begin the process of recovery.
Our Volunteers and Peer Mentors teach free classes, volunteers lead weekly support groups, and volunteers in the office provide resource information to family members and individuals coping with mental illness.

| Dear NAMI friends,
In 2009, NAMI Multnomah will be challenged to find creative avenues to support the significant increase in demand for our programs.Simultaneous processes are occuring while we watch. People are turning to NAMI for support, education and advocacy as community mental health programs are reduced or discontinued, and the stigma associated with mental illness is reduced. Our call volume requesting help in locating mental health resources had doubled, and class enrollment for Family-to-Family and Peer-to-Peer has almost doubled.
We need more help than ever to support the increase in demand and create additional support groups and programs. Whether it is donating dollars to support a Family-to-Family class, donating your time to run a support group, becoming an "In Our Own Voice" presenter, donating $600 for a document printer, teaching a class or recruiting teams for our NAMI Walk--we need you!
We will also need to continue to build collaborative partnerships with agencies and hospitals and pursue every funding source for donations.
Please contact me to share your ideas and comments.
Regards,
Margaret Brayden, Executive Director
