Welcome to the Genesee County affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill
(NAMI Genesee County).
We are a grassroots family support group founded in 1983 and have over 120 dues
paying members. There are over 50 local NAMI affiliates in Michigan and a state
NAMI-Michigan office in Lansing Michigan. Our local motto is "Give hope and help".
Following the NAMI NATIONAL guidelines, we have four major goals:
1> Support: Provide personal sharing and empathy at monthly support meetings
2> Education: Provide opportunities to learn about mental illness, gain coping skills
and find hope.
3> Advocacy: Provide opportunities to advocate for change that will improve the
quality of life for our ill loved ones, including dispelling stigma and promoting the fact
that mental illness is a physical disorder and is treatable. We advocate for governmental
and private research of severe and persistent mental illnesses.
4> Co-operation: We work with other agencies who advocate quality care for those
afflicted with a serious brain disorder and their families.
