NAMI Columbus - A Family of Families

When a serious physical illness strikes someone, flowers and fruit baskets are sent. Neighbors and friends call and come by to see how they can help. If the illness is on-going, many organizations provide respite care and assisted care. Support and sympathy is abundant. When a biologically based brain disorder strikes however, life becomes a huge struggle. Friends and relatives avoid you. No flowers or fruit baskets arrive to cheer you. The stigma of mental illness confronts you on an almost daily basis. Consumers of mental services and/or relatives and friends of someone with a no-fault brain disease are frequently left alone to discover how to deal with all of the almost overwhelming obstacles in trying to find effective help.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the nation’s voice on mental illness.  NAMI Columbus wants families to know that we are here for them and that they are not alone. We need you to help us spread the word about NAMI Columbus to other families who are struggling with the effects of mental illness.

NAMI is a national network of people who volunteer to work together to improve the lives of people who are affected by a wide-range of serious biological brain disorders.  NAMI Columbus is the largest affiliate in Georgia at this time.  But we need YOU in order to help us grow.

We meet the 3rd Monday of every month at 6:00 pm.  Generally, an educational program is presented.  In addition we offer two weekly NAMI Connection (Adult Recovery) support groups and 1 weekly Families/Friends Support Group.

We want to share our Community of Hope with anyone who dealing with mental illness. The motto of NAMI Columbus is "We care because we've been there!" We remember vividly how we felt when the illness first struck and we use this empathy to reach out to others who are struggling. We "pay it forward" by helping others navigate the mental health system.

NAMI Columbus is a 100 percent volunteer and tax deductible organization.

The NAMI Columbus office number is:  (706) 320-3755.  Or you can reach us at our e-mail address:  info@Namicols.org.
