National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

************************************************************************************

Here are three documents that update you on the decisions the Health and Human Services Committee has made about cuts to social service programs.

These recommendations now go to the Appropriations Committee for their consideration. As you can see, the recommendation about NAMI Maine is split, with 9 voting to leave us as we are and 5 voting to reduce our funding by $152,986. These cuts, all of them, are unimaginable, and I feel certain that every single member of the Health and Human Services Committee was unhappy to have to make them.  Heartening is that not a single member of that committee voted to make the recommended reduction of $220,000 to NAMI Maine. Nonetheless, and with all due respect, we must continue to speak to our local home-town legislators and ask them to speak to their colleagues on Appropriations and in their caucuses about supporting the majority report, the one that does not cut us.

Please tell them these are desperate times for NAMI Maine; the loss of $152,986 would be crippling and would mean eliminating vital programs and the staff that lead them.   Support for NAMI was visible at the public hearings – over 100 people testified, over 100 sent written testimony, and over 600 signed the petition.

This is a lot of public support to keep us alive.  Please, also, speak to them about mental health services and the impact of all of the proposed reductions…If you have questions, please call 1-800-464-5767, (207) 622-5767 or email us at info@namimaine.org.
