What are Mental Illnesses?
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt
a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illness is a disorder of the brain. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible!
What is NAMI?
The National Alliance on Mental Illness is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
Who is NAMI?
Members of NAMI are families, friends and people living with mental illness. At the heart of NAMI's mission is our grassroots and the sharing of information with people with mental illness, their families, friends, and the community. NAMI of Central Suffolk, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides support, education, and advocacy throughout the Suffolk County area on behalf of families affected by mental illness and their loved ones-all free of charge to the public. NAMI of Central Suffolk is a 100% volunteer run organization so all donations go to further our mission.
What does NAMI do?
NAMI of Central Suffolk, Inc., strives to offer hope, reform and health to our community through support, education, and advocacy efforts.
Why Should I join NAMI?
When you join NAMI, you join thousands of Americans in fighting for hope, health and a cure
for mental illness. By joining NAMI, you will
belong to a network of people like yourself–
individuals and families who understand the daily challenges people with mental illness face, and who are working to meet those challenges. Your membership will ensure that life saving information, support and educational programs are available.
