NAMI  Johnson County

We serve Iowa City, Coralville, and the rest of Johnson County; although anyone is welcome to participate in our organization and activities.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's leading grassroots, self-help, and family advocacy organization solely dedicated to improving the lives of people with serious mental illness.

NAMI Johnson County (NAMIJC) is an organization where people can meet and learn from each other.  Educational meetings provide information about illnesses, symptoms, treatment options, and available services.  Advocacy and public education activities offer opportunities to improve the system of care.

Our program is titled; LISTEN: A Student Nurse's Guide to Psychiatric Nursing

LISTEN is a film that was created specifically for student nurses, but reaches beyond those boundaries to receive interest from other disciplines, such as mental health care providers, and mental health care consumers.   The premise of the film is that consumers can be the best teachers of young providers in psychiatric patient care. With providers bringing in their years of experience as a framework, LISTEN asks the mental health consumer "What would you like providers to know?"  The filmmaker, Susan Chenoweth, MNHP, RN, is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She also has a B.S. in psychology from Northwestern College. She has an extraordinary understanding of the thoughts and feelings that consumers have about treatment, having worked her way back to mental health after a long commitment at a MHI in 2005. She lives with bipolar disorder.

All meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month and meet at the First Floor Conference room, Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.
