History

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Southeast Minnesota, originally known as the Rochester Area Alliance for the Mentally Ill was founded as a non-profit organization in 1986.  Our mission to help improve the lives of those affected by mental illness is rooted in the concern and compassion of the founding families who originally founded RAAMI.  Since that time our efforts focus on offering support, advocacy, and education.

NAMI Southeast Minnesota Now

Our grassroots organization has grown under the leadership of a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of consumers, family members and professionals from our community.  NAMI Southeast Minnesota continues to be driven by the dedicated support and involvement of its now more than 250 members.

Funded by the United Way of Olmsted County, Rochester Area Foundation, Dodge County United Way, and private contributions, the organization is currently staffed by a Director, Office Administrator and Volunteer Program Coordinator, to oversee its day to day operations, provide information and referral services, coordinate volunteers, and provide educational programs in the community.

We welcome all who are concerned with our mission or who are affected by mental illness to join our efforts. Our community presentations are open to the public and free of charge.  Please contact us to share your story, find information, volunteer or make a financial contribution as a tribute to someone you know and love who is affected by mental illness. Both a membership form and a volunteer application are available right here on our website.  To contact the office feel free to call or email any of our staff listed under the Contact Us section above.

Working together we can realize our vision for a compassionate, equitable, accessible mental health care system in our community, our state and our nation.

NAMI Southeast Minnesota Vision for the future

For people with mental illness, their families, friends, and caretakers, our organization strives to:

  • Eliminate lack of education and understanding of mental illness to encourage those experiencing symptoms of mental illness to seek treatment;
  • Combat the devastating effects of stigma by enlightening people with the realities of mental illness;
  • Advocate for policies & practices that encourage the development of equitable, community-based mental health services; and
  • Empower mental health consumers, families, & professionals by supporting active recovery in themselves, their loved ones & the mental health care system in our community.
