We had another interesting and informative NAMI
meeting on May 16. Monica and Shantel gave the program In Our
Own Voice, telling about their journeys to mental health
through dark days, acceptance, treatment and developing coping
skills. After the meeting everyone enjoyed root beer
floats and socializing. (See photos on your facebook
page)
Thirty-five people learned about recovering from
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality
disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, clinical depression and
anxiety from a DVD shown during the presentation. One woman
feels free time is dangerous for her and she carefully
structures each day. Another woman lives alone but has a
little dog who gets her up and out of the house each day. A
man goes to the gym for a work-out to stay mentally and
physically healthy. June 16 there will be another Peer to Peer
class starting in Modesto. It’s the first step for people who
want to volunteer or to participate in NAMI’s outreach
programs. Call the NAMI office for information (209-558-4555).
Come join us next month for our NAMI
meeting on June 20, 6:30 PM to 7:30, Jana Lynn Plaza, 500 N.
9th Street,
Modesto. The speakers will be Karl von Specklesen and Linda
Torres from the Mental Health Board.
They
over-see many of the county programs and it will be a good
chance to learn how to navigate the mental health system.
We’ll have strawberry shortcake
with home-made whipped cream for a treat.
