Mental Illness Help Guides
What is Mental Illness?
Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders that can affect children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. They are caused by biochemical disturbances in the brain.
Statistics show that 1 in every 4 families is affected by mental illness. Locally, more than 200,000 people right here in Franklin County suffer from these diseases.
NAMI Franklin County is working hard to improve the quality of life for individuals in our area that suffer from mental illness and to provide support for the people who love them.
Mental illnesses are not caused by bad parenting, character weaknesses, or character flaws. Mental illnesses are not the same things as mental retardation. However, mental illnesses do cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling, and relating, and they can cause people to have a difficult time coping with the ordinary demands of life.
