About Us

NAMI Austin is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization and an affiliate of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and NAMI Texas.

We are a volunteer network of families, consumers, friends, and concerned professionals working together to improve the quality of life for those affected by severe and persistent mental illness. Our goal is to enable each individual affected by a major brain disorder to live the best life possible. NAMI Austin provides a place to meet and learn from others and to let others learn from you.

We educate ourselves and others about mental illness.

We promote better treatment and support services, and advocate for research into the causes and treatments of mental illness.

We are a network of people working to improve the lives of all who are impacted by serious mental illness.

A copy of our current Bylaws are available in PDF format using the link at the bottom of the page.

Our Mission

The purpose of the NAMI Austin is to perform the following charitable, educational and scientific activities in order to improve services for mentally ill persons and for families of the mentally ill:

a) To promote the quality of care, rights and interests of the mentally ill, particularly those who cannot speak for themselves, and to advocate such policies at the local, state and national levels as will accomplish these objectives.

b) To develop an enlightened and more sympathetic public understanding of the problems of those afflicted with mental illness and increased awareness of the public responsibilities in dealing with these problems.

c) To encourage the extension and improvement of present facilities and the creation of new ones, the main focus being extended care programs within the community (case management, housing, crisis care, outreach programs).

d) To promote the understanding of mental and emotional illness, the eradication of the stigma associated with mental illness and the establishment of rehabilitation programs.

e) To promote research into the physiological, neurological, biochemical, psychological and genetic aspects of chronic mental illnesses that could lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of their causes, treatment, and prevention and bring about their eradication.

f) To promote job training and employment of professionals and nonprofessional mental health workers to foster a more therapeutic environment for the mentally ill.

g) To undertake any activity that future experience may indicate is of benefit to mentally disabled persons and their families that does not compromise the non-profit status of the Corporation.

h) To acquire the necessary real estate, plants and equipment to carry out all of the foregoing objectives.

i) To receive voluntary contributions and to raise funds to be used exclusively for educational, scientific, and charitable purposes.
