ABOUT US
Dear Friends,
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated one in five adult suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Children are being diagnosed at younger and younger ages. In addition, four of the ten leading causes of disability in the U.S. and other developed countries are mental disorders such as major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time.
Unlike cancer and cardiac disease, brain disorders often receive a hostile reception from the general public, some businesses, insurance companies, and even some in the medical community. People with mental illness can and do recover. As with other illnesses such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS, early detection is key. Unfortunately, staying in the closet, denial, and postponing treatment is prevalent.
The mental health crisis is having a devastating effect on education, law enforcement, business, and health care, to say nothing of the devastation to families. NAMI’s mission is to educate these communities in order to reduce the stigma and encourage treatment.
Remember NAMI Cape Ann’s motto, "We can’t control the wind. We can adjust our sails."
At present, we can’t prevent or cure mental illness. We can de-stigmatize and treat it.
Please help us "adjust our sails."
Thank you from your friends at NAMI Cape Ann.

There are a number of NAMI support and education groups throughout the state that can provide understanding, comfort, hope and help for mental health consumers, as well as the family members and friends who care for them. Most of the groups are facilitated by trained volunteers. It is always a good idea to call the contact person before attending because meeting dates, times and locations may change. You are welcome to attend any support or education group that is convenient. Visit www.namimass.org for more information.
Currently, NAMI Cape Ann hosts two support groups, one for consumers and one for family members and friends. Both meet at the NSHP Community Center, 67 Middle Street, Gloucester (next to the YMCA) on the first Wednesday of the month. Refrshments and socializing at 6:30 p.m. Groups meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Informational fact sheets and brochures on a variety of subjects are available, including a Family Resource Book, Police Response Guide, Missing Person Guide, and Suicide Prevention materials. Many of the publications are available in Spanish as well as English.
In addition, NAMI Cape Ann provides opportunities for consumer artist members to reproduce their works, display and sell them at various local venues, and at the Art Marketplace at state convention.
Call 978-281-1557 or e-mail: namicapeann@comcast.net for more information about any of these events.
NAMI Cape Ann receives funds for many consumer and educational activities from the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation and from the Ansara Family Foundation, for which we are profoundly grateful.
