About Us
General Information
NAMI Virginia (the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Virginia) was created in 1985 to provide support, education, and advocacy for consumers and families in Virginia affected by mental illness. NAMI Virginia provides support, education, and advocacy for people with mental illness and their families. We are not a direct service provider but we do provide information and referrals through our toll-free statewide HelpLine. NAMI Virginia is located in Richmond, Virginia, where we are appropriately situated in close proximity to the state legislature.

Mission
Our mission is to promote recovery and improve the quality of life of Virginians with serious mental illness through support, education, and advocacy.
We are part of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness
There are more than 220,000 members and 1,200 state and local affiliates nation-wide. NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses. Funding sources for NAMI programs include hundreds of state and local governments and foundations; tens of thousands of individual donors; and a growing number of corporations. NAMI's greatest asset, however, is its volunteers -- who donate an estimated $135 million worth of their time each year to education, support, and advocacy.
Local Affiliates
NAMI Virginia's 27 local affiliates play an active role providing support, education, and advocacy at the community level. They operate support groups to let people know they are not alone and to be there with information and support when needed, and speak publicly to educate others about brain disorders. They provide Family to Family education courses. They advocate for effective and timely services from their local service providers, and they offer hope to those suffering from the effects of mental illness and their families.
Programs
NAMI Virginia and its local affiliates offer Family and Consumer programs to both members and non-members. Family programs include Family-to-Family, MESA (Mutual Education Support Advocacy), Peer-to-Peer, Connection Recovery Support Groups, Family Support Groups, and Visions. Consumer programs include Peer-to-Peer, Connection Support Group, and In Our Own Voice. Please see our Programs page for more information on each of these programs.
