NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore offers a variety of workshops for community and professional audiences, as listed below:
All Audiences
Basics about NAMI: This is a 30-60 minute workshop led by a trained family member and/or a consumer of mental health services. The presenters will speak about their personal experiences and give a broad overview of the key programs and services that NAMI offers.
Science and Treatment: This is a 60-90 minute workshop led by trained family members of persons with mental illness. The presenters will speak about their personal experiences as a family member of someone with a mental illness, and give factual information about psychiatric disorders.
Children and Adolescents Outreach Workshop: This is a 60-90 minute workshop led by trained parents who have raised children with psychiatric disorders. The presenters will speak about their personal experiences and review common emotional responses of families dealing with mental illness.
Provider Workshops
Uncertain Journey: This is a workshop which examines the uncertainty families face when they are the treatment providers for a loved one with a mental illness. This workshop has limited availability.
Mental Illness Issues: This presentation works to improve provider's interactions with persons with mental illness through increasing empathy and understanding. The workshop discusses: why people deny they have an illness, why people do not want to take medications and distinguishing symptoms from unhelpful coping strategies. A fee is required for this workshop.
Working with Families in Crisis: This workshop is led by a trained family member and will help crisis workers work more effectively with family members dealing with the trauma of mental illness. The workshop will provide specific and practical strategies to extract useful collateral information while de-escalating a crisis situation.
Hearing Distressing Voices (Virtual Voices): This workshop includes a segment in which participants are hooked up to individual audiocassette players with earphones and are assigned simple tasks which they must perform while 'hearing" auditory hallucinations. A mandatory briefing and de-briefing allows the audience to put this experience into context and to apply it to their interactions with persons with psychiatric disabilities. A fee is required for this workshop.
