2013 ANNUAL REPORT

NAMI Far North was founded in Sandpoint in February 2007 with only 5 members, and it gratefully closed out the year 2013 with 72 individual members, represented by 58 paid-up memberships in the NAMI national organization. The difference between the number of individual NAMI Far North members and NAMI members is attributable to several NAMI family memberships that each include several individuals.

Thanks to a resoundingly successful fund-raising event on June 9, 2013 and the generosity of the local community and the Milt and Judi Stewart Family Foundation, NAMI Far North ended the year with healthy bank account balances. The event, NAMI Far North’s third ‘Take a Seat at the Table’ included a full dinner, music, over 70 donated items offered in a silent auction and more than 40 artist-created chairs, stools, benches and related items that were sold in a lively auction energetically managed by auctioneer JoJo Baker. NAMI Far North is grateful for all those who attended, volunteered, donated and/or created items for this event. With funds secured through ‘Take a Seat at the Table’, a metaphor for the uniting of the community around discussing and improving mental illness care and treatment, CIT Academy funding is assured for several years to come, and NAMI Far North is in a position to assist other non-profit organizations in achieving common goals. As an example, during 2013, NAMI Far North contributed toward the purchase of a new van for use by the Disabled American Veterans, and stands ready to assist in local human rights and homeless task force efforts to provide some form of facility for respite/emergency shelter or care.

Take a Seat at the Table was not just a fund-raising event, but a celebration of five years of CIT in Region One. During the year 2013, CIT Academy No. 5 trained 30 individuals from 12 agencies in the region and a special gift enabled NAMI Far North to sponsor Idaho State Patrol Cpl. Leslie Lehman to attend the CITI (CIT International) Convention, returning to provide law enforcement leadership and expertise in the Region.

During 2013, NAMI Far North conducted Family-to-Family classes in both Bonners Ferry and in Sandpoint, providing information, encouragement and hope to families with loved ones living with mental illness. The support group for individuals with mental illness, NAMI Connection, continued to meet twice monthly in every month except December, and the Family Support Group met monthly, following the Regular Monthly meetings. Monthly support meetings also were held in Bonners Ferry under the leadership of Board member Gini Woodward, maintaining a NAMI presence in the very far north and providing encouragement to those unable to travel regularly to Sandpoint.

Publication of the monthly (except December) NAMI Far North ‘Advocate’ newsletter was expanded in 2013 with the printing of an additional 60 copies of the newsletter each month and distribution to display stands in doctors’ offices, clinics, therapists’ offices and other places where information about NAMI resources and meetings would be welcomed. NAMI Far North has begun exploration of ways to cooperate with Sandpoint Community Resource Center to create a directory of services and to disseminate information about mental illness to a wider audience.

Plans for the year ahead include CIT Academy No. 6 which will be conducted under the sponsorship of NAMI Far North, Department of Health and Welfare Region One and the Bonner County Sheriff’s office on February 17 – 21, 2014.

Respectfully submitted,

Ruth J. McKnight
