NAMIWalks Northern Virginia
"Catch the Wave" with NAMI Northern Virginia!
Thanks to everyone who participated in NAMIWalks Northern Virginia on September 28. You are making an incredible difference for individuals and families affected by mental illness!
But it's not over yet! We have until October 31 to meet our goal of $100,000.
If every registered walker raises an additional $125, we will exceed our goal! Not sure where to start? See below for sample letters, Facebook posts, follow-up notes and more.
WHY walk? Your participation makes possible our unique support and education programs for individuals, families, teachers, students, police officers, and others in Fairfax, Falls Church, Arlington, Alexandria, and Loudoun.
This year's "Catch the Wave" theme will provide a fun-filled day at the "beach" right here at the Fairfax County Government Center. This family and community event will be filled with music, activities, and entertainment!
Walkers and sponsors help give hope! One NAMI Northern Virginia program participant said, “There is a great dynamic in being with people who are living through the same situation as yourself. When coupled with all the genuinely useful information that NAMI has compiled…it is a life-changing experience.”
More than ever your support is needed. Participation in our programs has more than doubled in the past 3 years, but we still have waitlists for many of our programs. We want to be able to fulfill all of our requests for our community education presentations, including “Family to Family” and “In Our Own Voice.” You can make the difference in making sure we can continue to expand these unique and in-demand resources in our community.
Together we can turn the tide!
To register as a walker or create your own walk team today, visit: www.NAMIWALKS.org/NorthernVirginia. To find out more about sponsorship, or for any questions about the Walk, please contact Stephanie Shinn directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or (571) 329-6362.
We look forward to seeing you on Walk Day to share food, fun, and friendship!
Together we will "wave" goodbye to stigma!

NAMIWalks Northern Virginia 2013 is officially 25 days away, and we are doing a great job! I wanted to thank you so much again for walking with us this year. It's going to be a great event, and for an even better cause! Everything raised through NAMIWalks will go towards incredible mental health education and support programs right here in Northern Virginia.
*Add information about why your group is walking: what the Walk means to you, a certain person you are walking for, etc.*
As a reminder, the Walk will be held on September 28, which means the event is coming up very soon! For each of us to reach our goal of $100 (and win an awesome NAMIWalks T-shirt!), let's each set a smaller goal of $35 this week!
All we have to do is think of 7 people, and ask them for $5. Or we can ask 3 people for $10 and 1 person for $5. It's that easy! I've attached a sample fundraising letter to make it even easier. All you have to do is change the name, signature, and personal page. (marked in blue text)
If you've asked friends and family members, but haven't gotten a response, don't get discouraged. People want to donate, but often forget! Sending out a reminder will encourage them to support you.
I also wanted to organize something fun for our Team to celebrate how far we've come! *Insert here about group fundraising or team bonding activity - car wash, bake sale, game night, karaoke night, bowling, and more!*
Because of our efforts, we will be able to help improve the lives of so many people. We have the chance to make such an incredible difference, and I am so glad we are doing it together!
Thank you again for walking with us this year! Let's look at our list of possible donors, send out the fundraising letter to 7 people, and each meet a goal of $35 by Sunday night.
GO TEAM! I KNOW WE CAN DO THIS!

WHY DO WE WALK?
In Northern Virginia, family member, friends, and individuals living with mental illness are asking about our programs every day. Many of our popular education classes, like Peer-to-Peer, have waiting lists. We want to reach new communities, such as young adults and Spanish speakers. And we want to pilot new programs, like Breaking the Silence. We can achieve these goals by working together! Please support us by asking others to donate in your name. Raising $100 or more earns you a free T-Shirt at the Walk!
WE ALSO WALK BECAUSE:
Because recovery is real
To raise funds for NAMI-Northern Virginia's free support and education programs
To honor our loved ones
To promote an open dialogue about mental health, and to spark conversation about mental illness
To reduce the stigma that prevents individuals from seeking treatment
To make a difference - right here in Northern Virginia
To celebrate wellness, recovery, and HOPE
