BASICS for PARENTS OF CHILDREN & TEENAGERS

This is a free, six session course, for parents and other primary caregivers of children and teenagers living with mental illness.  These children or adolescents have either been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance or who are experiencing symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed.  The course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or other caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness during childhood/adolescence.

The course elements include: information about the illness and symptoms; treatment options; the impact of the child’s illness on the rest of the family, an overview of the systems involved in caring for children and teens and the importance of record keeping.

National NAMI has video clips at http://www.nami.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Find_Support/Education_Training_and_Peer_Support_Center/NAMI_Basics1/NAMI_Basics_Videos.htm which address 28 questions like:

Can children and adolescents really develop mental illness, and what is mental illness?

How do I know if my child is really having a problem, or if it is just a phase, and when do I look for help?

What is the best way for me to work with the mental health professionals caring for my child?
