Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training for Law Enforcement

February 2nd through 6th, 2015

Funded through a State of Wisconsin Youth Crisis Grant, Waukesha County Health and Human Services and The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Waukesha County are pleased to offer a Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) Session with a special emphasis on youth and young adults.

CIT is a comprehensive five-day 40-hour training session designed to assist law enforcement officers and other first responders in recognizing and understanding the signs and symptoms of mental illness including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders, as well as other associated illnesses including developmental and cognitive disorders. In addition to the core elements of CIT training, this session will also include a specific focus on the early signs and symptoms of mental illnesses as well as the culture and social issues of teens and young adults.

·         You will learn various options to facilitate de-escalation of the mental health consumers in crisis.

·         You will learn about resources in your community that are available to youth and young adults and their families.

·         You will learn how interacting on a regular basis in this kind of outreach program reduces the potential for crisis and/or injury of the officer, consumer, or others.

This training experience will be very challenging, not unlike these types of calls for service. Your effort will not be without rewards; the skills taught in this course will be used throughout your life both personally and professionally.

This training is modeled after the Best Practices “Memphis Model” of crisis training for law enforcement.

Training will take place Monday, February 2nd-Friday, February 6th from 8 am to 4 pm each day and will be held at the Waukesha County Mental Health Center located at 1501 Airport Rd in Waukesha.

How to register: Via email- or call 262-409-2741. Please include your name, department, phone number, and email address.

Please Note that a stipend of $1300 will be reimbursed to departments for each officer that successfully completes the course. As space and stipends are limited there may be a limit to the number of officers that any one department can send as well as the number of stipends to be reimbursed. Stipends are only available for sworn officers employed by Waukesha County law enforcement agencies.
