                    HISTORY OF NAMI FAMILY-TO-FAMILY EDUCATION

In April, 1993, NAMI Illinois (one of six states) adopted the

Journey of Hope Education Program.  The name was changed to NAMI

FAMILY-TO-FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAM in 1998.  Today, 49 states

offer NAMI'S FTF free 12-week education program to families who have

           loved ones with mental illness.

NAMI's FTF Education Program, written by Joyce C. Burland, Ph.D.,

clinical psychologist and family member, has received national acclaim

for this remarkable education in mental illness program.  Many graduates

of Family-to-Family Education in Kane County and throughout the nation

have told us that there lives have been changed through the 12-week

series of in-depth classes.  More than 350,00 family members have

             benefited over 20 years.

NAMI Kane County completed its first 12-week course in Spring,

1994.  Since that time, NAMI KC trained teachers have taught 15

             completed 12-week courses.

                                                 PEER-TO-PEER EDUCATION

available by calling Guy at 847-683-2371.  NAMI Kane County is looking for

additional consumer mentors.  If you are a consumer in recovery and interested

         in co-leading a 9-week (2 hrs./wk) education course and earning a stipend,

         please call Guy or:  847-426-4594.

IN OUR OWN VOICE - PRESENTATIONS

Guy and Joyce presented the "In Our Own Voice" Program to a NAMI

audience in April, 2010.   They are looking forward to presenting their program

to many organizations in Kane County.  To inquire, call Guy at 847-683-2371.
