Announcing the NAMI Family-to- Family Education Course

NAMI-Kaufman County will offer free education and support for families who have relatives with a brain disorder. This is a 12 week course with a curriculum that focuses on schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and self-care around worry and stress. The curriculum has been written by an experienced family member who is a mental health professional and the course will be taught by NAMI-Kaufman Co. family member volunteers who have taken intensive training as course instructors. The classes are usually offered in September of each year for 12 weeks. Official dates are to be announced for 2008. This course is a wonderful experience!”, says instructor Glenn, “ It balances basic psycho-education and skill- training with emotional support, self-care and empowerment. We hope families with relatives who have a serious brain disorder will take advantage of this unique opportunity.” The course is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses, significant others, teenage and adult children of persons with severe and persistent brain disorders. The course is not appropriate for individuals who themselves suffer from severe brain disorders.
