A six-week education course offered for parents and primary care givers of
children or adolescents living with mental health issues.
Classes are offered without charge.
Registration is required.
Since classes fill up quickly, early registration is recommended.

NAMI Basics - If you are the caregiver of a child under 18 who struggles with a serious emotional or mental disorder, the NAMI Indianapolis Basics Course is designed for you. Learn from trained parents who have “been there” regarding illness symptoms, treatment options, and how to advocate for medical and educational services for your child.
NAMI Basics Education Program Curriculum
Class 1: Introduction: It’s not your fault; Mental illnesses are brain disorders
Class 2: The biology of mental illness; getting an accurate diagnosis
Class 3: Treatment options, evidenced based practice, medications
Class 4: Affects on the entire family, new communication skills, problem solving skills, tips for handling challenging behavior, crisis preparation and response, developing a relapse plan
Class 5: Learn about the systems (mental health, school) and your child's rights
Learn how to keep records of your child
Class 6: Advocacy, Review, Sharing and Evaluation
