Family-to-Family Education Program

Once a week for 12 consecutive weeks and for no charge, families of persons diagnosed with a serious mental illness have the opportunity to learn about the major mental illnesses from trained family members.  The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively.  The Family-to-Family (F2F) Program is offered in spring and fall.  For more information or to register, contact Judy at 610-668-7917 or F2FMainLine@aol.com.

Event: Family-to-Family Education program
Date: 

Beginning Thursday, March 21, and meeting once a week for 12 weeks, from 7-9:30 p.m.

Place:  Lankenau Hospital area on the Main Line
Note:   Family-to-Family (F2F) is a free series of 12 weekly classes, one evening per week, structured to help family members understand and support a relative diagnosed with a serious mental illness while maintaining their own well-being.  The course is taught by trained volunteer family members who know what it’s like to have a loved one with a serious mental illness.  If you have questions or to register contact Judy at 610.668.7917 or F2FMainLine@aol.comRegistration is Required. 

Family-to-Family's (F2F) 12 Education Modules include: 

  1. Learning about feelings, learning about facts
  2. Introduction to schizophrenia; diagnosis, critical periods
  3. Introduction to depression and bipolar illness; causes and diagnosis
  4. Basics about the brain
  5. Problem solving skills workshop
  6. Medications review
  7. What it's like to be mentally ill/empathy workshop
  8. Communication skills workshop
  9. Relative groups and self care
  10. Rehabilitation
  11. Advocacy: fighting stigma and discrimination
  12. Certification and celebration

The fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with mental illness

NAMI Basics is a new NAMI national signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness.  This free six-session course is facilitated by trained teachers who are also parents/caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness in childhood.  The course provides the fundamentals a caregiver needs for themselves, their family, and their child who is living with a mental illness.  For more information or to register, contact Judy at 610-668-7917 or F2FMainLine@aol.com.

NAMI Basics includes:   

  1. Introduction to the stages of emotional reactions of the family to the mental illness; including crisis, shock, denial, grief and acceptance.
  2. Insights into understanding of the lived experience of the child living with the mental illness, including learning to separate the child you love from the illness that alters their behavior and abilities
  3. Current information about Attention Deficit Disorder, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Childhood Schizophrenia and Substance Abuse Disorders
  4. Current research related to the biology of mental illness and the evidence-based, most effective treatment strategies available, including medications used to treat mental illness in children and adolescents
  5. Specific workshops to learn problem solving, listening and communication skills
  6. Examples of strategies that have been found helpful in handling challenging behaviors in children and adolescents
  7. Information about the systems that are major players in the lives of children and adolescents with mental illness – the school system and the mental health system
  8. Exposure to personal record keeping systems that have proven to be effective for parents/caregivers in their interactions with the school and healthcare systems
  9. Information on planning for crisis management and relapse
  10. Information on locating appropriate supports and services within the community to build a community of support for the parent/caregiver
  11. Information on advocacy initiatives designed to improve and expand services, with an emphasis on personal advocates for the parent/caregiver and child on an individual level
