In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness

In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is an informational outreach program on recovery from mental illness, designed to be heard by consumers of mental health services, families, students, mental health professionals, law enforcement professionals, and anyone who wants to learn more about mental illness and the journey towards recovery.

IOOV presentations offer insights into how people with serious mental illnesses cope with the realities of their disorders while recovering and reclaiming productive lives.  IOOV presenters are trained and certified by NAMI, and offer living proof that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, and that recovery is an ongoing reality.  Come hear their insights ...  share your observations ... and ask questions.

In Our Own Voice is a national program chartered and overseen by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  It is currently offered in 14 states, and now by NAMI Southern Maryland in our region.

NAMI Southern Maryland IOOV Presentations can be scheduled by contacting our office.

All IOOV presenters must complete a 16 hour NAMI training course.  During training, presenters learn to organize the details of their stories, prepare for audience participation and inquiries, and tailor presentations to a variety of groups.  Upon completion of the training, presenters are provided a stipend for every presentation they give.

Contact NAMI Maryland to find out where your nearest IOOV program is and other details about training.
