One in four adults experiences a mental health disorder in a given year and mental illness can affect persons of any age, race or socioeconomic status.  Further, one in seventeen adults live with a serious mental illness.  For those diagnosed with mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other conditions, moving toward recovery can be a life-changing experience.  The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible.

NAMI Indianapolis is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the foremost grass-roots organization providing support, education and advocacy for persons living with a mental illness as well as their families, friends and communities.  Dedicated to improving the lives of persons dealing with a mental illness, NAMI Indianapolis promotes four important initiatives:

  • Expanding and offering more Family-to-Family opportunities.  Family-to-Family is a 12-week education program designed for family members, partners and friends of persons with a serious mental illness.  Additionally, we will be offering expanded Family-to-Family programming in collaboration with the Roudebush VA Medical Center, designed specifically for veteran families and friends.  Since 2001 the United States has deployed more than 1.5 million soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq.  After returning home, 20% of service men and women are diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, traumatic brain injury and other mental illnesses.
  • Continuation of Peer-to-Peer.  Launched in 2010, this 10 week education program for persons with mental illness currently in recovery was one of the more popular and requested programs.  Peer-to-Peer will be offered in various geographic locations around Marion County and the surrounding counties served by NAMI Indianapolis.
  • Expansion of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training, a 40 hour training for law enforcement professionals is a collaborative venture between NAMI Indianapolis, local law enforcement and mental health providers, providing the skills for law enforcement staffs to divert persons into treatment. In recent years, CIT has expanded to nearly every county in the NAMI Indianapolis service delivery area! In 2012, NAMI Indianapolis successfully launched “CIT for Youth”, a customized version of the CIT program designed for school administrators, security personnel and others to identify and intervene students who may be in crisis.

When a person living with a mental illness or a friend, or family member of a person living with a mental illness contacts the NAMI Indianapolis office, they receive practical and useful coping techniques and help in order to identify appropriate and needed community resources, as well as a cadre of support and education programs, always offered at no cost to the community.  People receiving support and resources from NAMI Indianapolis realize they are no longer alone.

These are challenging economic times.  NAMI Indianapolis needs your support now to make sure these programs and services continue.  Do it because NAMI Indianapolis was able to provide support and education when you needed it.  Do it to support those Hoosiers living everyday with a mental illness.  Do it because NAMI Indianapolis is always there so those who reach out for help understand the are no longer alone.  Whatever your reason, give to NAMI Indianapolis today.  Make your on-line donation today!
