NAMI has a number of information sheets covering specific mental illnesses and related topics on the National site.

The National Library of Medicine, the medical library at the National Institutes of Health, is the nation's premiere source for medical information.  Their databases are designed for different groups, including patients and doctors.  NLM provides:

  • news stories for the past 30 days.  These stories are organized by illness.
  • summaries of medical information for different mental illnesses.
  • information on ongoing clinical trials by area and illness.
  • If you are a doctor or otherwise understand medical terminology well, check out Medline.  It is used by medical school faculty to keep current, as well as by many practicing physicians.  The abstracts are taken directly from medical journals, so it's too confusing for most non-medical users.  You can arrange to have articles you want sent to you from Wisconsin medical libraries for a small fee.  The president of our affiliate used to search this database frequently while working at a major medical school, and can provide information on how to use it if you need help.  Contact Us.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)  has breaking news on mental illnesses and publications to order for free.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has free publications on most mental health topics, as well as on substance abuse.

Yahoo also provides major news stories for the past 30 days for mental illness, which is not sorted into more detailed conditions.  I was not able to link to the current content directly, so follow the link labeled "news," then "health," to "diseases/conditions."  On the right down a bit is "Mental Health."

Madison Institute of Medicine has information centers on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and on Lithium (which is often taken for mania in bipolar disorder).  They also have information on other mental illnesses.  They will perform searches for information on those topics for a small fee, and send you articles.  Their contact information is:
