\IrisMembership in NAMI-The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill

Annual dues are usually collected in March of each year, and include membership in your local affiliate, State affiliate, and NAMI-National.  There are several different kinds of memberships: Individual or Family, Professional, Business and Open Door, which is a special rate. Please contact your local NAMI to find the membership for you.

Usually each affiliate sends a local newsletter monthly to members, describing the activities for that month. All members also receive the NAMI-National magazine, the Advocate, which is mainly educational and informative.

Funds are used to provide a solid base for us to continue to grow and get our word out about mental illness.

The image on the left, an iris, we have adopted as a symbol in honor of the famous painter, Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch painter, who painted mostly in France, around the time of the Impressionist movement. He painted with an intense inner vision, creating masterpieces which burn their way into the mind and heart.  He also suffered from the effects of a mental illness, but, as he wrote to his brother Theo,

"As for me, you must know I shouldn't precisely have chosen madness if there had been any choice. What consoles me is that I am beginning to consider madness as an illness like any other, and that I accept it as such."
