MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

COMES TO BLAIR COUNTY. . . . .SAVING LIVES. . . . .BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY

FIRST AID =

Emergency treatment administered to an injured or sick person before professional medical care is available.

You may know CPR and the Heimlick Maneuver.  You can call 911.  BUT can you administer First Aid  in a MENTAL HEALTH  crisis?  What does depression look like? Or anxiety? Have you met people experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors?  Trauma? Panic attacks?  Substance use disorders? Eating disorders?  Grief?

How would you know?

How can you help?

 MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID=

The initial help given to a person showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental health crisis (such as, severe depression, psychosis, panic attack, suicidal thoughts and behaviors) until appropriate professional help is available.

A 12-hour course prepares the public to provide Mental Health First Aid to those in need.  This course is delivered by local certified Mental Health First Aid USA instructors who complete a 5-day training and meet certification requirements.  You will learn:  (1) potential warning signs, (2) a 5-step action plan, (3) the prevalence of mental illness, and (4) resources available.

The stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents people from seeking help or even acknowledging that they need help.  If they do want help, they don’t know where to turn.  Mental Health First Aid equips the public to help persons experiencing mental illness connect to care.
