MAC EVENTS:

 Goals
  • To reach out in culturally competent ways throughout our community; educating interested community members about mental illnesses, recovery and hope.
  • Advocate for more services to be provided in culturally appropriate venues as determined and desired by the community.
  • Work to enhance relationships with providers of mental health services including: overcoming barriers so that we can honor language, spirituality and cultural practices.
  • Work with the community to increase the understanding that mental illnesses are like any other illness.

Did You Know...

  • African Americans tend to rely on family, religious and social communites for emotional support, rather than turning to healthcare professionals.
  • Mental health problems among minorities are especially likely to occur jointly with substance abuse.
  • Latinos are twice as likely to seek treatment for mental disorders in settings, such as general healthcare or their church, than in mental health settings.
