NAMIWALKS
NAMI Greater Orlando Walk for the Mind of America
NAMIWalks for the Mind of America is a fundraising and awareness-raising component of NAMI's Campaign for the Mind of America. Launched in 2003 with 12 pilot sites, it has grown to nearly 80 sites all across the country. Walkers are encouraged to reach out to family, friends, co-workers and business associates to raise support for their participation in the Walk. All proceeds from NAMIWalks will be used to fund NAMI's local programs.

On Saturday, May 2, NAMI Greater Orlando had our 5th Annual Walk for the Mind of America, a fundraising and awareness-raising event to benefit NAMIGO programs and services for Central Florida’s mentally ill. Held in beautiful Lake Lily Park in Maitland, the Walk attracted more than 500 enthusiastic participants, plus dogs on leashes and babies in strollers. We had 42 registered teams represented this year with many new faces joining us for the first time. With donations from four different countries and more than 30 U.S. states, we are proud to announce that we’ve surpassed our 2009 fundraising goal: to date, we’ve received more than $54,000!

In addition to raising money and awareness, the NAMIGO Walk also served as a memorial to people who have lost their lives to mental illness as well as a celebration for those courageously living in recovery. Signifying this strength, four teams primarily composed of consumers led us through the balloon arch as we kicked off the Walk.

This year, we continued our tradition of having a consumer art show and a silent auction but added free chair massages courtesy of Massage Solutions of Central Florida, a booth offering the Secure Child identification program, and many other information tables along the walk route. With delicious food, lively music, gorgeous lakeside scenery and a proclamation by Maitland Mayor Douglas T. Kinson, the day was indeed successful…and fun!
