NAMI East Bay serves a membership which comes from Alameda County and  West Contra Costa County in the San Francisco, California, Bay Area.    NAMI East Bay, being one of three NAMI affiliates in Alameda County, joins with them, the state and national NAMI organizations in viewing our role as improving the quality of life for those whose lives are affected by mental illness.

We share the NAMI mission goals regarding support, education, advocacy and research. We strive to accomplish these goals through public education and informtion activities, family and consumer peer education and support activities, and advocacy on behalf of affected families and people living with mental illness.

Besides the support groups we run monthly (see our Welcome page), we have a bimonthly newsletter and host a bimonthly educational meeting where we feature a speaker, video presentation or panel discussion. The meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of every other month at 7:30 PM at the Northbrae Community Church, 941 The Alameda in Berkeley.  Topics are announced in our newsletter and on this website under Programs.

We also offer Family to Family classes and are in the process of having new teachers trained so classes may be offered on a more frequent basis.   For more information, see Family to Family classes.

In our office, we have a small but comprehensive library of books about mental illness, along with videotapes of noteworthy programs.  We also offer a selection of informative brochures.  All are available to check out.  Please call to find out when a volunteer will be in the office to help you.

Members of our affiliate have been very active with the city of Berkeley's Department of Mental Health and with the Alameda County department of Behavioral Health Care Services (ACBHCS). We have actively participated in the MHSA (Mental Health Services Act) process and have strived to represent the family perspective in committee meetings, study groups, etc. Towards that end, several board members are part of the Alameda County Family Coalition and we have monthly meetings with the Director of the ACBHCS where we discuss and work on issues of common concern.

Our Board of Directors meets monthly.  If you are interested in attending a board meeting, please call our office.  We welcome visitors.
