NAMI Connection

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a weekly support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each other's experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding.  There is no need to register for the group. 

It will take place every Saturday from 10am-11:30am here at the NAMI office. 

 Each group:

  • Meets weekly for 90 minutes

  • Is offered free of charge

  • Follows a flexible structure without an educational format

  • Does not recommend or endorse any medications or other medical therapies

All groups are confidential - participants can share as much or as little personal information as they wish.

Meetings will be guided by NAMI Connection’s Principles of Support

NAMI Connection is supported by AstraZeneca.

 


Monthly Education Meeting

NAMI GREATER MILWAUKEE MONTHLY EDUCATION MEETING

We have a Guest Speaker the last Monday of every month (except November & December) who will discuss a different topic of interest concerning mental health.  The meeting takes place at the NAMI Greater Milwaukee office, 3732 W. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 106. Entrance off the parking lot (in rear).

Sojourner Family Peace Center

Guest Presenter: Debra Fields, Community Education and Prevention Coordinator

Join us to hear about the enhanced services that are now part of the Sojourner Family Peace Center. Ms Fields will not only identify these changes but will also discuss domestic and other kinds of abuse. She will highlight the effect abuse has on the victim and how it extends into our community.

Peer-to-Peer

Peer-to-Peer is a unique, experiential learning program for people with any mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery.  Peer-to-Peer consists of ten 2-hour units and is taught by two NAMI-trained "Mentors" and one Volunteer who are personally experienced at living well with mental illness.

THE NEXT CLASS WILL BEGIN ON TUESDAY, MARCH 18TH 2014 AND WILL RUN EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY THROUGH APRIL 17TH. CLASS HOURS ARE 10AM-12PM. If you would like information or wish to register for the next class please call us at 414-344-0447 or email to shirleyd@namigrm.org.

A new class is beginning on Wednesday, May 28th 2014 and will take place every Wednesday until August 13th. Classes are from 6:00-8:30pm.

The class will be held at Walking in the Spirit Ministry at 6420 W. Mitchell St. in West Allis. Plenty of parking is available.

WRAP Group (Bilingual)

 WRAP GROUP for Spanish Speakers

Wellness Recovery Action Plan

We will provide the materials needed to help you begin to develop your personal action plan. Group discussion will be facilitated by Serge Blasberg, State Certified Peer Specialist, trained in developing WRAP plans, and Bilingual co-facilitator Jeanette Arellano. Recovery is attained through hard work, self awareness and knowledge. Come join us as we support one another in our pursuit of living productive, healthy and socially satisfying lives. This group is FREE, and works best when completing the full four weeks.

  • Identifying Early Warning Signs and an Action Plan
  • Identifying When Things Are Breaking Down

This group also provides the opportunity to teach individuals to help others develop their own WRAP plans. While this is not a formal "train the trainer", we will try to help you develop the skills needed to effectively work with others.

"Pieces - In My Own Voice"

NAMI's own Education and Outreach Coordinator, Brenda Wesley, has written and produced a Play;  It is titled "Pieces, In My Own Voice", and it's a thought-provoking theatrical production depicting the lives of People Living With A Mental Health Diagnosis.  To date, over 3,000 people have seen it and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

·       Is your child “out of control”?  Have you “tried everything”?

·       Are you (or others) questioning your parenting skills?

·       Do you wonder or has anyone suggested your child might have ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression or any other type of “illness of the brain”?

·       Has your child recently been diagnosed with a mental illness or brain disorder?

·       Has the diagnosis provided an explanation for some of the behaviors, but raising a whole new set of frightening questions?

·       Are you feeling confused, isolated, concerned or unsure about where to go from here?

 YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

 We have been where you are and we want to help!

NAMI Basics is taught by trained parents who have lived similar experiences with their own children. NAMI Basics is an educational program that provides learning and practical insights designed specifically for parents and primary caregivers of children or adolescents living with a mental illness. 

 This FREE 6 week Course curriculum includes: 

  • The trauma of mental illness for the child and the family
  • The biology of mental illness:  getting an accurate diagnosis
  • The latest research on the medical aspects of the illness and advances in treatment
  • An overview of treatment options – treatment works
  • The impact of a child’s mental illness on the rest of the family – caregivers and siblings
  • An overview of the systems involved in caring for children and teens
