Every Tuesday evening NAMI volunteers attend the Sacred Heart Hospital Johnson Unit Family Education Program to offer support and guidance for families who have a family member admitted to the Johnson Unit. The JU staff has observed that so many families feel that they are the only ones dealing with a hospitalization, and NAMI offers relief and support to family members who learn they are not alone. They say that for many family members, a hospitalization is a step that has been preceded by much stress, conflict and volatile events so that at this time there begins a grieving process. NAMI members can share in the universality of these feelings, but more importantly, they offer expression of hope.
