This morning NAMI Maryland held a press conference in Annapolis to announce that Maryland earned a B in the NAMI Grading the States report that was released today. This report measures the progress that states have made in transforming their mental health systems. Maryland was one of 6 states to receive a B, the highest grade given. The national average was a D.
Presenting at the conference was Lynn H. Albizo, J.D. Executive Director of NAMI Maryland, Brian Hepburn, M.D., Executive Director of the Mental Hygiene Administration, Steven S. Sharfstein, M.D., President and CEO of Sheppard Pratt Health Systems and Deanna Green, Recovery Advocate.
The presenters noted that the collaboration between the State of Maryland with advocates, families, consumers, public and private providers and academia have made success possible. Also noted was the need to expand effective services throughout the state so that all Marylanders have access to quality mental health care.
It was recognized that Maryland is a national leader in promoting wellness and recovery. Deanna Green, recovery advocate spoke eloquently of her personal successes after receiving services in the public mental health system.
NAMI emphasized that in these tough economic times, mental health services are in even higher demand. Funding the Maryland Mental Health System has been a good investment. Budget cuts could threaten progress. Only with sufficient funding will Maryland continue to make progress and remain a national leader in mental health care.

May 30, 2008- Employing Group Organizing, a new trend in the organizing industry, the Maryland Association of Professional Organizers (MAPO) guided
NAMI-Metropolitan Baltimore in sorting through 25 years of old files, outdated materials, and accumulation in preparation for its move to a newly renovated workspace.
Group Organizing uses a combined-force effort. A MAPO-led group is able to accomplish more tasks in a day than any single organizer could. The people power of 10 MAPO members
and 20 NAMI-Metropolitan Baltimore staff and volunteers completely organized offices in preparation for the move to the temporary location. Trisha Hays, MAPO member, states,
"Much was accomplished in a short time. Working in a organized environment gives your mind freedom for the task at hand and inspiration for what could be."
