UNC Conte Center Brain Mapping Project
Is there a 9-18 year old in your family with a mother, father, brother or sister with Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder?
There is a research study that is looking at how the brain works and grows in children and teenagers using safe, state of the art methods for clinical assessments and brain imaging.
The study takes place at both UNC in Chapel Hill, and at Duke University in Durham, NC.
What is Involved?
An MRI is used to take a picture of the brain using magnetic fields. These pictures show us brain activity.
An EEG is also used to measure the brain's normal electrical activity. This will be done using a cap connected to a computer. Each child will also be given a clinical assessment by a trained clinician that asks about family and medical history.
What are the benefits?
While there are no direct benefits to your family, you are helping us learn more about Schizophrenia and how it develops.
Risks?
The research assessments are all safe, routine, and contain no radiation. Your information is kept strictly confidential.
How can my child help?
Contact our research coordinator to see if your child can participate!
Families and children are compensated up to $260 for their time and travel while in the study and may be able to repeat the study every year for up to 5 years.
