Peer Recovery Support Specialist
The Philosophy
Individuals with lived experience in the journey of recovery from mental illness and addiction possess critical information necessary to the recovery of others and to the education of professionals in the mental health fields. Individuals who have received or are receiving mental health and addiction services serving in the role as providers help expand the range and availability of services and supports that are offered by professionals.
NAMI OK is committed to workforce development and rehabilitation for those that are survivors of mental illness and addiction disorders. We eagerly endorse the Peer Recovery Support Specialist training opportunity for the State of Oklahoma. We embrace the transformation of the culture of our workforce to demand this representation in our professional treatment environments. We also embrace a spirit of inclusion and partnership with other advocacy organizations in the mental health and addition fields and the critical addition of non-traditional partnerships increasingly brought into that fold.
The Role
The role of the PRSS is to provide peer support to the individual receiving treatment and to serve as an advocate and consultant, to those in treatment and recovery, while serving in a partnership role with the treatment team as a whole. The PRSS is able to provide professional providers a “walk through” perspective on what it is like to receive treatment in various settings and levels of care. This perspective in some way serves as the interpreter between the treatment services provided by the professional and the treatment participant/family members and vice versa.
The Training
This 40 hour week long training program focuses on a building peer leadership throughout the state. The core curriculum of this training highlights the importance of wellness and recovery through the active efforts and involvements of trained peer leaders. There is no cost to for this training.
