NAMI Mississippi is proud to offer educational courses for consumers, family members, caregivers, and mental health professionals.

  • FAMILY TO FAMILY -- a free  12 week course for family members and friends of individuals with serious mental illnesses.  These classes are taught by trained NAMI family members.  Course participants gain a greater understanding of mental illness, cope much better, worry less, feel newly empowered to advocate for better treatment and services for their relatives.
  • PEER TO PEER -- a free course consisting of nine two-hour units  of education through experience on the topic of recovery for persons with serious mental illnesses who are interested in establishing and maintaining wellness.  The course uses a combination of lecture, interactive exercises and structured group processes, and the diversity of experience among course participants affords for a lively dynamic that moves the course along.  Courses are taught by teams of three trained "mentors", or peer teachers, who are themselves experienced at living well with mental illness.
  • NAMI BASICS  -- a free series of workshops for families and direct primary caregivers of children and adolescents with brain disorders.  Caregivers may be parents, extended family, or foster parents.  Following the lead of other successful educational curriculums, Parent To Parent is a family member to family member course.  Teachers of the program will be trained family members who have experienced firsthand the rewards and challenges of raising children with brain disorders.  The course offers caregivers an opportunity to share mutual experiences and learn valuable lessons from one another as well as covers educational material and provides the basics for day-to-day caregiving skills.
  • PROVIDER EDUCATION -- This 10 session course is designed for mental health providers.  Driven by managed care innovations, particularly those related to customer satisfaction and treatment outcomes, the practice of involving families in the process of hospitalization, discharge, treatment planning, follow up and monitoring is fast becoming the benchmark of effective primary care.  This course is taught by a five person panel consisting of two consumers of mental health services, two family members, and a mental health professional.  It provides a unique perspective and insight into the delivery of services from the customers of mental health services.
  • IN OUR OWNVOICE (IOOV) -- a unique, informational outreach program developed by NAMI that offers insight into the recovery now possible for people with severe mental illness.

Updated times and locations of classes are listed on this website.  Please view the specific class headings as they will be updated when information is available.
