Introduction to the Hearing Voices Movement

Public Presentation and Discussion

Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 6:00 PM,
Location: Lane County Behavioral Health Services, 2411 MLK Blvd. Eugene OR

Featuring a panel of experts, video appearances by leaders in the Hearing Voices movement from around the world, and your questions and comments!

Did you know that:

• Lots of people hear voices who don’t have a mental disorder
• When people do have problems with voices, it’s often because they haven’t learned how to handle them
• Voices commonly emerge in response to life problems experienced by individuals, and if listened to, offer clues about the problems and how to resolve them
• All over the world, people are meeting in groups to discuss voices and other “extreme states” and are sharing new ideas about how to handle them
• The Eugene/Springfield Hearing Voices and Extreme States Support Group will start meeting in Eugene in February, 2013! This group will be open to everyone who hears voices, sees visions, experiences extreme states and/or has unusual beliefs, whether or not the person has a mental health diagnosis or takes medication. The group aims to be inclusive, non-judgmental, pro-treatment choice and pro-diversity, and it will be FREE, no registration required! Click here for more information on this support group. 

This introductory presentation on March 13 is free and open to the public, including voice hearers, family members, professionals, or other interested persons!

Film Exploreds Marijuana Use and its Links to Schizophrenia in Young Adults

The program consisted of a free public screening of the film The Downside of High and a discussion facilitated by Dr. Michael Farivar, Eugene psychiatrist and past medical director of Lane County Behavioral Health Systems.

According to the film’s website, “teenagers who start smoking marijuana before the age of sixteen are four times more likely to become schizophrenic. That’s the startling conclusion of some of the world’s top schizophrenia experts, whose research is featured in the documentary The Downside of High.”
