A community services board (CSB) is the single point of entry into publicly-funded mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse services for its service area.

HOUSING
Locating appropriate housing can be a challenge for many people, including those individuals with a mental illness. Nevertheless, there are many different types of resources available.
A. Assisted Living Housing
Assisted Living Housing provides a wide range of housing options with various levels of support.
Local Community Services Board (CSB) Mental Health Services are generally the gatekeepers for placement. Local CSBs include Fairfax-Falls Church CSB, Arlington CSB, and Alexandria CSB, as well as Loudon CSB and Prince William CSB.
(Note: Fairfax County has over 500 people waiting for assisted living housing. The wait for housing is often more than a year. Getting on a waiting list as soon as possible is something to consider. There is generally no obligation to accept an offer should needs change in the meantime.

Pathway Homes has a variety of programs that span the continuum of care, meeting individual support needs from highly supported to highly independent. All of Pathways' programs are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and comply with the American Disabilities Act.
Qualifications include:
Being at least 18 years of age. Being a resident of Arlington County or Fairfax County, or the Cities of Fairfax or Falls Church, depending on the program. Having a history of serious and persistent mental illness.
(There are two groups of people who are not accepted into Pathways' programs: Persons exhibiting behavior which would be a danger to themselves, the community or other residents; Persons actively abusing alcohol or other drugs.)
The programs include:
Stevenson Place, an assisted living facility (ALF), serves 36 residents. In addition to 24-hour supportive mental health care, it provides comprehensive services for medical, nursing and personal care needs. Dave's House is a regional Discharge Assistance and Diversion program. It provides highly structured 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week supervision and services for eight adults. Intensive In-Home Program. Pathway Homes has two eight-person programs, one for men and one for women. These highly supported environments provide training and education in daily living skills and managing symptoms of mental illness. Semi-Independent and McKinney Homes. Pathways owns and operates six semi-independent houses serving 18 individuals. Staff members are present at scheduled times, generally weekday afternoons and evenings and occasionally on weekends, working with residents on independent living skills and individual goals. Another 56 semi-independent residents in 15 townhouses are served through the McKinney program. Before becoming McKinney program participants, these residents were homeless. This program is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Supported Living. Pathways provides services to adults in their own homes through supported living programs in Arlington and Fairfax. In these programs, counselors provide support and case management services on a flexible and individualized basis. Supported Housing Options Program. Pathways' most innovative program, serving more than 150 people, is the Supported Housing Options Program (SHOP). This program, a partnership with the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, employs consumers of mental health services as mental health counselors providing services to other consumers. The goal of this program is to assist individuals to obtain their own, independently leased permanent community housing and provide the flexible and personalized support needed to maintain it.
Brain Foundation
Buys homes and tenants (selected by Pathway Homes or the CSB) pay rents rangint from approximately $150 to $350. The Brain Foundaion pays the utilities, HOA, maintenance and the difference in the Mortgage amounts. Limited services provided to tenants through CSB or Pathways

PRS Supported Housing PRS makes permanent housing with support services available to the homeless living with psychiatric disabilities in Northern Virginia. Residents of PRS Supported Housing live in three-bedroom townhomes in close proximity to PRS Day Program locations, Fairfax County community mental health centers, and other community amenities. Length of stay is determined on an individual basis with no time limitations. Residents receive an array of day program services through PRS, as well as ongoing case management, community living skills training, supportive counseling, and crisis intervention from Residential Services staff, who provide an average of 10 - 20 hours of onsite supports to residents each week. Residents also receive mental health treatment, case management, and medication management through the Fairfax - Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) Mental Health Services.
PRS Willow Lane Intensive Supported Housing is an intensive supported housing program that makes permanent housing, residential support services, psychiatric rehabilitation, and psychiatric treatment available to adults with psychiatric disabilities being discharged from hospitals into the community. Staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, PRS Willow Lane provides a coordinated system of support services to give residents an environment with a high degree of structure and supervision. These services, delivered in a format that promotes successful recovery and community integration, include case management, community living skills training, supportive counseling, medication management, and crisis intervention. Residents may also attend PRS day programs.

Bridge Housing Program is a short-term transitional housing program for homeless, single adults who have mental health and/or substance abuse issues. The program is funded under the Fairfax/Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB). UCM has a contract for 20 hours a week to provide case management for the clients and the CSB is to provide weekly mental health services to clients. The program helps clients to build the skills and financial stability to bridge the gap between homelessness and a stable living environment. The program currently serves six people.
Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services
The mission of Good Shepherd Housing (GSH) is to reduce homelessness, increase community support, and promote self-sufficiency. It is governed and managed by a diverse, multi-denominational board of directors (22) and staff (6 full-time and 5 part-time) with an approximate annual operating budget of $2 million and $5.4 million in assets. GSH manages about 70 housing units. See the Financials page for additional details.
The GSH offices are located in the Mount Zephyr Business Center at 8305 Richmond Highway, Suite 17B, at the corner of Richmond Highway and Reddick Avenue. We are located at the back of the office complex on the second level. Should you need to visit us, bus service and parking are readily available and we are a half mile north of the South County Government Center on the east side of Richmond Highway.
GSH serves the area bounded by I-495 to the north, I-95 to the west, the Potomac River to the east, and the Occoquan River to the south. It encompasses substantially all of Fairfax County's Human Service Region I. Similarly, this area includes the majority of both the Lee and Mount Vernon Districts of Fairfax County.
B. Rental Assistance and Home ownership voucher program

Section 8, Housing Choice Vouchers is a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) federal housing program that financially helps moderate or low-income families with disabilities to rent or buy a home.
C. Other non-profit programs
Habitat for Humanity (HFH)
A non-profit Christian organization that builds accessible homes for people in need. If approved you are granted a home and a favorable mortgage loans that are sponsored through donations, volunteer work and local, private, federal and state resources. HFH is a globally known organization and has built homes for families and individuals with disabilities and in need of financial support all over the world.
D. Residential Treatment Programs
Facilities offering residential care to adults with serious mental challenges, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, personality disorders, and disorders combined with substance abuse. Many of these are “private pay” so be sure to ask about insurance, funding, scholarships, etc. For additional resources, visit ARTA (American Residential Treatment Association).
