The face of the population of the homeless has changed.  The fastest growing groups are seniors, working poor, and veterans.  These are unhealthy realities that challenge the safety and sustainability of our communities.

  1. Approximately 200,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depress illness are homeless, constituting one-third of the approximately 600,000 homeless population.
  2. At any given time, there are more people with untreated severe psychiatric illnesses living on America's streets than are receiving care in hospitals.  Approximately 90,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are in hospitals receiving treatment for their disease.
  3. Many homeless people hide from the eyes of most citizens.  They shuffle quietly through the streets by day, talking to their voices only when they think nobody is looking, and they live in shelters or abandoned buildings at night.
  4. The New York Times recently reported that in Berkeley, California, "on any given night there are 1,000 to 1,200 people sleeping on the streets.  Half of them are deinstitutionalized mentally ill people.  It's like a mental ward on the streets."

NAMI of Ellis County wants to thank the models  for their portrail of our homless.
