FAMILY-TO-FAMILY EDUCATION COURSE

Our chapter offers NAMI's acclaimed Family-to-Family Education Course.  The Family-to-Family Education Course is a FREE 12-week course for families of individuals diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and anxiety disorders), as well as those who exhibit behavior that strongly suggests such a diagnosis.  The course is appropriate for parents, siblings, adult and teenage children and significant others of persons with these severe and persistent disabilities. Call our office for the up-and-coming course which will begin this fall (we should know the exact September date by late August). You must call our office ASAP to register and request an application at 610-623-0071. NOTE: First come, first served. Space is limited.

The curriculum focuses on the major psychiatric illnesses and emphasizes the clinical treatment of these illnesses.  The curriculum also presents the knowledge and skills that family members need when faced with the problems of mental illness.  The course is taught by trained NAMI members who volunteer in two-member teams.

The course balances basic psycho-education and skills training with self-care, emotional support, and empowerment.  Important components of the course are:

1. Information about schizophrenia and the major affective disorders (bipolar and depressive illness, obsessive/compulsive and anxiety disorders).

2. Coping skills; handling crisis and relapse.

3. Listening and communication techniques.

4. Problem solving and limit setting; rehabilitation.

5. Self-care; learning how to recognize the normal emotional reactions to chronic stress.

6. Basic information about medications.

7. Information about connecting with appropriate community services and community supports.

8. Advocacy: getting better services, fighting stigma.

The next Family-to-Family course: Call the office at 610-623-0071 and for questions and/or to register.

NOTE: If you're interested in becoming a facilitator for this program, the next training is October 2013. Please do not hesitate to call the office and discuss and/or register. It is a great community service that is so helpful to many families. So consider. (610) 623-0071.

PEER-TO-PEER

Our Peer-to-Peer course is a 10 week program offering free mentoring by consumers for consumers in healthy living with a mental illness. Peer-to-Peer provides an educational setting focused on recovery that offers respect, understanding, encouragement, and hope. Peer-to-Peer classes meet once a week for 2 hours, offering a wealth of information on mental health and recovery.

Following our inaugural, highly successful first series, our second Peer-to-Peer Course will be held Spring 2014. Dates TBD.

IN OUR OWN VOICE

NAMI offers "In Our Own Voice," a unique presentation that lends insight into the hope and recovery now possible for people with severe mental illness--presented by people who have been there. Please contact our Chapter if you or your organization is interested in hosting our trained speakers to present for your group.

NAMI CONNECTION

NAMI Connection is a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness in which people learn from each othersí experiences, share coping strategies, and offer each other encouragement and understanding.
