Statewide Mental Health Merger:

What does this mean for you?

As far back as 2001, our North Carolina mental health system has been managed by twenty-five Local Management Entities (LME’s). These LME’s managed the delivery of services to individuals with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities and substance abuse.

All LME’s across the state will merge together into a larger Managed Care Organizations (MCO) to meet the new statewide requirements.  The state’s strategic plan called the 1915(b)(c) Medicaid Waiver includes two major components:

  • The formation of MCO’s have just about been implemented and are ready to replace the current LME’s in order to meet increased population requirements in the areas they will serve.
  • The distribution of state Medicaid funding directly to these newly created Managed Care Organizations (MCO’s)

NAMI Rutherford-Cleveland is very encouraged that more direct funding will hopefully mean Medicaid dollars will be used more effectively in our local community. We commit to supporting a smooth transition and will advocate for persons who have a mental illnesses to ensure that their needs are met.
