NAMI Fort Wayne is dedicated to helping families of children and adolescents with serious emotional, behavioral and mental disorders through support, education and advocacy. A special support group for parents and other caregivers of children with mental health needs meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Carriage House Clubhouse, 3327 Lake Avenue. For more information, call the NAMI Fort Wayne office at (260) 447-8990.
The Child and Adolescent Action Committee of NAMI Fort Wayne has compiled a Resource Guide for Educators that you can use to help you become more knowledgeable about how you and your child’s teacher can work together to create a school environment conducive to his or her academic success. It will help you know what to expect of your child with mental health needs; how symptoms of your child's brain disorder may impact his or her school functioning; and how you can support your child’s education both in the classroom and at home.

Just released Protection and Advocacy Services Commission study regarding "Time-out, Seclusion, and Restraint in Indiana Public Schools". IPAS’ intent in providing this information is to begin a serious and long overdue dialogue about the unregulated application of restraints and seclusion in our schools. Our ultimate goal is that every student in Indiana is protected through the consistent and effective application of policies and practices that both thoughtfully defines and carefully regulates any use of restraint of seclusion in all educational settings.
Please contact IPAS at 800.622.4645 and request your copy of “Time-Out, Seclusion, and Restraint in Indiana Schools Analysis of Current Policies” and the accompanying “Time-Out, Seclusion, and Restraint in Indiana Schools Literature Review” or visit http://www.in.gov/ipas/2760.htm to read or download the reports.ad or download the reports.
If you are a caregiver who has utterly exhausted community mental health care resources, you may be considering sending your child to a residential treatment center. Residential treatment is an extreme measure that should only be taken if local resources have proven inadequate. The NAMI Child and Adolescent Action Center has developed a guide to help families who are considering residential treatment programs for their children make an informed decision. Click on the link below for information about this valuable resource.

"The burden of suffering experienced by children with mental health needs and their families has created a health crisis in this country...Too often, children who are not identified as having mental health problems and who do no receive services end up in jail. Children and families are suffering because of missed opportunities for prevention and early identification, fragmented treatment services, and low priorities for resources."
