Beneath The Label Of Mental Illness

On a Sunday morning in Austin years ago, I met my future mother-in-law. Actually, I didn't meet her that morning, though I saw her from afar. I had seen her often, I realized, but I hadn't known she was the mother of the lovely and accomplished woman I soon would marry. On that particular Sunday, Dawn was selling flowers on the Drag, on a street corner near the university. Wearing a man's dirty gray sports coat, ragged pants and a Day-Glo green cap with an oversized gold pin stuck through the crown, she clutched a bouquet of rosebuds and was shifting from one foot to another, back and forth, back and forth. She was engaged in an animated conversation — with herself.
