NAMI Rochester's Family Support Groups

FREE SUPPORT GROUP FOR FAMILY MEMBERS OF PERSONS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS OFFER SUPPORT, SHARED WISDOM AND PROBLEM SOLVING

1 in 5 families cope with the severe mental illness of a family member. Do you know someone who is a family member? Would they find a support group beneficial?

Who:              This support group model, which is run by trained family members, has been designed to help families effectively cope with a family member’s mental illness.

What:                The support groups are not illness or relationship specific. They include problem solving and shared wisdom which helps improve effective coping skills when dealing with a family member’s mental illness. The groups are designed for parents, siblings, spouses, teen-age and adult children and significant others of persons with severe and persistent mental illness such as schizophrenia, mood disorders (bipolar and major depression), anxiety disorders and other chronic mental illnesses. The groups are not appropriate for individuals who themselves suffer from one of the major mental illnesses unless they are a family member as well.

These groups use the NAMI National Support Group Model
