TAREN

TAREN (STARS) is a self help support group for families and individuals of South Asian origin.

TAREN is an acronym for "Together Achieving Results, Empathy and Normalcy."  The group's concept is that the individuals and families affected by mental health issues are Stars obscured by clouds of Stigma, Unawareness and Unkindness.  TAREN's mission is to help dispel the clouds and let the Stars shine with all their effulgence. The group aims to do this by Support, Education and Advocacy. TAREN is very inclusive of the population from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal. People from the island nations in the vicinity are also welcome to join.

The group meets on the third Saturday of every month at the YICG in New Hyde Park at 10:30 am. Please call Mr. Raghu Raghavendran at (516) 944-8537 for more information.

TAREN support group had a wonderful opportunity to 'go on air', when ITV, the local Indian Channel wanted to interview them.  This was done in two parts, one with Janet Susin, Lorraine Kaplan and Raghu Raghavendran, giving an introduction to Mental Illnesses and the role NAMI and NAMI Queens/Nassau have played and it also introduced the South Asian Support Group, led by Raghu Raghavendran.

The second session with Raghu Raghavendran, Uma Ashok, Radha Sankar, Indu Katra and Roshan Kingham was recorded on January 15th, 2011 in three segments.  Each segment would be broadcast in a half-hour interview over three weeks.

This YouTube clip shows excerpts from the latter three interviews.
