TeenScreen is a suicide prevention and early intervention program developed by Columbia University

It has been shown to help schools identify students who may be in need of mental health treatment or who may be feeling suicidal and to link them to immediate services if necessary.  NAMI Maine can train school health personnel in how to use the screening tool and how to start a program.  The TeenScreen program itself is free.  The costs for implementing TeenScreen primarily involve dedicating staff time to starting and delivering the program.

In addition, the school will need to develop relationships with community service providers that can provide assistance when students are found to be in need.

Maine Initiative to Integrate Schools and Mental Health Services

NAMI Maine is contracting with Maine Department of Education through Keeping Maine’s Children Connected, an initiative of the Governor’s Children’s Cabinet members on a grant to Integrate School and Mental Health Services. NAMI Maine will be working with mental health providers, schools, and families to bring children’s mental health into focus in Maine’s schools.  The goal of this 18-month grant is to enhance collaborative and integrative efforts between schools and mental health service systems.  Grant components include a state advisory board, data tracking systems for youth at-risk, identification of area strengths and needs, training, and protocol development and evaluation.  Our hope is to provide a model for statewide implementation for improved school / mental health integration.

This is a project of Keeping Maine Children’s Connected funded by the federal Department of Education and supported by the Maine Department of Education through a grant from the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (#Q215M080038)
