Thank you for your interest in volunteering or interning with NAMI Dallas. The first step in becoming a volunteer or intern is to fill out and return the volunteer/intern application. Once we receive it, we will contact you to set up an interview where we can discuss your interests and our available opportunities.
Volunteers are needed to greet visitors, answer and direct phone calls, and complete clerical tasks as time allows. The receptionist will be the first point of contact for the office and will help set a friendly and helpful tone. This is an ongoing opportunity located in our NAMI Dallas office. The receptionist shifts are Monday – Thursday from 9:00-1:00 or 1:00 – 5:00 with a commitment of two shifts a month for at least six months.
Volunteers are needed to keep the NAMI Dallas office running smoothly. Office assistants will complete a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, sending out new member packets; putting together training materials; and completing small and bulk mailings. This is an ongoing opportunity located in our NAMI Dallas office. Office assistants can commit to a regular schedule or be on-call as projects arise.
Helpline Information & Referral
In many ways, the NAMI Dallas Helpline is the face, voice and ears of NAMI Dallas. When individuals living with mental illness, families, loved ones and professionals call NAMI Dallas, we take pride in providing a unique service to these callers. Helpline volunteers will work to provide the most appropriate community-based referrals to our callers, with some follow-up assistance as needed. Helpline volunteers must commit to working at least one 4-hour shift a week for at least 4-6 months.
We are looking for people who want to educate the public about all the work that NAMI Dallas does. Educational outreach volunteers will attend events and resource fairs on NAMI's behalf. Volunteers will staff an information table by passing out NAMI Dallas literature and answering basic questions. This is an ongoing on-call opportunity.
If you have personal experience living with a mental illness or are a friend or family member of a person living with mental illness, we would like you to share your story. Speakers will present a NAMI Dallas written public awareness talk into which they can weave their own stories. This is an ongoing on-call opportunity.
Volunteers are needed to assist on the day of the walk with registration, set-up, route stations, and clean up. To help with the planning of the event, volunteers can join the NAMIWalks committee.
Volunteers are needed to serve on NAMI’s committees and/or Special Events: Education, Nominating, Public Policy, By-laws, Fundraising, Finance, Special Events, and NAMIWalks. This is an ongoing opportunity with a monthly commitment of approximately 4 hours.
NAMI in the Lobby
NAMI in the Lobby is a new outreach and support program being offered by NAMI Dallas. This program will provide support and resources in hospital and community mental health centers to individuals living with a mental illness and their families. The goal of this program is to ensure that every psychiatric facility has NAMI materials and resources available. Volunteers are needed to provide weekly support in the community, and help assemble packets and provide them to the local providers.
NAMI Program Instructor & Facilitators
Volunteer instructors and facilitators are needed to lead Family-to-Family classes, Family Support Groups, NAMI Connections Support Groups, NAMI Basic classes, Peer-to-Peer classes, and conduct In Our Own Voice Presentations. All interested persons must be willing to attend a one-time training and commit at least teaching 2 classes per year or facilitating a weekly or monthly support group for NAMI Dallas.
NAMI Dallas offers a variety of internships throughout the year. All of the internships are unpaid but we will assist you in meeting the requirements of your school's internship program and will provide letters of recommendation and references based on your performance.

The development intern will be able to experience all aspects of the development department including donor development, event planning, and communications. This internship will be heavily focused on assisting with event planning. The work the development intern does will contribute to the success of these ventures leading to continued monetary support for NAMI Dallas’ programs/
This internship will help NAMI Dallas prepare for the next fiscal year of grant proposals. The grants intern will update NAMI Dallas’ organizational overview, write separate templates for each program, research new grant prospects, and assist with grant management. This position is invaluable in providing well written templates that will allow the staff the flexibility to readily respond to grant opportunities throughout the year.
Community Outreach Intern
This internship will work closely on micro and macro levels helping NAMI Dallas better serve individuals living with a mental illness, their families, and other groups in the community impacted by mental illness. The Community Outreach intern will work on the NAMI Dallas Helpline engaging individuals, making referrals, following-up with individuals, and working with other groups in the community to ensure that people are receiving and benefiting from NAMI Dallas and other community-based programs.
Public Policy Research Intern
Advocacy efforts are a major part of NAMI Dallas’ work. NAMI Dallas is an active participant on work groups and committees that address issues related to mental illness and NAMI Dallas maintains a strong presence at the Texas Legislature by advocating and supporting issues important to people living with mental illness and their families. The policy research intern will assist the executive director by researching topics related to work groups, committees, and legislative goals.
Volunteer Resources Intern
The volunteer resources intern will get to experience the entire process of volunteer coordination including recruitment, screening and interviewing, placement, evaluation, and appreciation.
The communications intern will get the experience of managing NAMI Dallas’ email communications, partaking in social media opportunities, and constructing a newsletter for monthly distribution. The communication intern will also work with media outlets to ensure that NAMI Dallas maintains a strong and positive presence throughout the Dallas area.
