Nothing is more important to our success than the dedication and effort of our volunteers. Materials and techniques can be copied by other agencies, but they can not duplicate the pride, enthusiasm and commitment of our people.  

NAMI St. Louis' Volunteer Program is certified by the United Way.

Attend orientation for new volunteers by making an appointment with Sharon Lyons at 314-962-4670 or through email at sharon@namistl.org.  Orientation includes an overview of NAMI St. Louis, a review of the handbook, an application to complete, and a discussion on a good fit for a volunteer task.  Please call to register:  Sharon Lyons, 314.962.4670, or email, sharon@namistl.org.

Volunteer Opportunities include:

  •  HELPLine Phone Associate
  •  Family-to-Family course teacher
  •  Peer-to-Peer course mentor (teacher)
  •  Visions for Tomorrow course teacher
  •  Provider course teacher
  •  Support Group facilitator
  •  Clerical/Office assistant
  •  Special Events (2 large fundraisers each year--Gala each fall and NAMIWalks each Spring require a large number of volunteers.)  There may be other events such as health fairs throughout the year. 
  •  Public Speakers--individuals willing to tell their story
  •  Board Member
  •  Committee Member (Advocacy, Urban Families Outreach, Tri-County Outreach)
  •  Advocacy/Legislative Network

Individuals interested in being HELPLine Associates, Course teachers or Support Group Facilitators must complete in-depth training and make a long term commitment.

Family-to-Family Course teachers must be family members of individuals with mental illness.  Peer-to-Peer Course mentor must be consumers (individuals diagnosed with a mental illness)h.  Basics teachers must have a child with a mental illness.  Provider course teachers may be a family member or a consumer.

We attempt to place volunteers in a position immediately after orientation; however, this is not always possible due to the number of openings the timing of the training, etc.
