NAMI Cape Cod was founded in July, 1982 under the name AMICUS, which stood for Alliance for the Mentally Ill to Create Understanding and Support. That year Edie and Leo Perlstein called together a small group of family members at the urging of their daughter's doctor, Alexander Hyde.

Over the years, the name has evolved to its present day NAMI Cape Cod . The organization was incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation and now serves the fifteen Cape Cod towns as well as the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
